VMS to Expand Employment Policy

During a special meeting of the Village Management Services board of directors on Friday, February 9, the members of VMS Inc.—the boards of directors of Third Laguna Hills Mutual, United Laguna Woods Mutual and GRF—voted to expand residents’ employment opportunities with VMS Inc.

The previous employment policy authorized qualified residents to hold part-time positions within the company; the new policy will also welcome full-time employment.

Executive staff, working with the VMS board, is preparing full-time employment guidelines for residents. The new policy will take effect later this spring after guidelines are finalized.

Stay tuned for further updates regarding this exciting development in future “What’s Up in the Village” editions, CEO updates during regular open board meetings and more.

What Do Other 55+ Communities Cost?

Have you ever wondered how the total assessments you pay in Laguna Woods Village stack up when compared to other active 55+ communities? With support of the VMS board of directors, the Financial Services Department has prepared a cost breakdown of various 55+ communities that compares average basic assessments, common-use amenities, total assessments, community locations, home values and amenities offered, and more.

The data is telling—favorably for Laguna Woods Village. Third and United mutuals together are by far the largest representation, with 12,425 homes, compared to the next-largest community with half the number of homes and a total basic assessment that is more than twice that of United’s and almost twice that of Third’s.

Also, consider the following:

  • Compare Third’s and United’s total and average basic assessments to other communities that are significantly smaller and offer far fewer amenities.
  • Compare the number of homes in each community to put landscaping and maintenance/construction tasking into greater perspective.
  • Certain utilities, such as trash, water, sewage and basic cable are included in Third’s and United’s total assessments.

Be sure to thoroughly review the entire comparison chart for more detailed insights.

Basic Assessment Information

Each year, the United, Third and GRF boards of directors determine monthly assessments required to fund operations, determine restricted fund contributions and set reserve fund contributions. Click here to read an article published December 8, 2023, that highlights basic assessment information and includes a graph of changes to monthly assessments for GRF, United and Third since 2014.
