Dear Governor Newsom :
I am a resident of the Laguna Woods Village in Southern California. This is a retirement community with 18,800 residents of the average 77 years old. We strongly opposite the Orange country’s plan to convert the Ayres Hotel next to the Administrative building of the Laguna Woods village to a homeless coronavirus shelter.
This hotel is located in the center of a populated area. It shares the same parking lot with our administrative building. It’s surrounded by Medical facilities, drugstores, Restaurants etc. The grocery stores and Home Depot are right across the street. We shop at these stores At very necessary times. Now . It becomes a taboo area.
We have sent very many emails to the Orange County supervisor Lisa Bartlett yesterday. She said that there is nothing that she can do to stop it.
We are so desperate, frightened, and angry.
When you order us to stay home. We follow it thoroughly. Even yesterday, I had an open letter in our Village newspaper, to urge our residents to follow the rules, no complaints.
I am glad that they all did. We haven’t found any case in our villages so far. However we are the most vulnerable group, with the coronavirus people around, we are worried and frightened.
Three days ago, We started a fund raising Program. Our volunteer covered themselves from head to toe, to drop the donation box at the door. They have collected $ $ 15,275 , in just three days. to buy protective medical supplies for the front line personal who risk their life to save other people’s life.
A Chinese newspaper reporter interviewed me yesterday. After she learned our story, she said “ How could they do this to your Community ? It is very cruel “. It’s in today’s Chinese news paper, “ World Journal “.
We understand that if we contracted this disease. We don’t have much chance to survive . However we do have our future to look forward. Therefore we hope our elected officials will re -examine the idea of locating a shelter with active with virus in our community. Please help us to move this shelter to another place.
