Laguna Woods Archery Club

The mission and goal of the Laguna Woods Archery Club (hereinafter “LWAC”) are to offer the benefits of archery as recreation, sport, and camaraderie to all Laguna Woods residents in a relaxing, fun, and safe environment. The annual club membership fee provides insurance for members as required by the City/GRF. The fee does NOT sponsor any external institution.  It directly funds the LWAC’s insurance premiums and range maintenance.  Training, coaching, and archery equipment are provided to club members without cost.

Laguna Woods Archery Club is the first and largest archery club within Laguna Woods Village that received a Conditional Use Permit from the City of Laguna Woods in 2017 to open and operate an indoor archery range in Village Club House #1.  LWAC is not associated with any other archery club. LWAC operates independently and is governed by a distinct set of regulations relative to its membership, activities, training, and range operating schedule.  LWAC’s insurance policy restricts participation at any LWAC-sponsored activity and/or range session to members only; it does NOT cover any member who participates in a non-LWAC-sponsored activity.

Club Information

The LWAC invites all Residents and their non-Resident friends to attend one of our open ranges (see club schedule) and witness our members enjoying the challenge and camaraderie of archery, a precision sport activity. Many members take advantage of our range sessions, which are offered seven days a week, except on VMS-recognized holidays. Every session is supervised by our well-trained (volunteer) Range Managers to ensure a safe and fun environment.

It is through strict universal range rules and protocols that archery remains among the safest sports worldwide. An archer may not draw and release an arrow without first receiving the command from the Range Manager, Range Safety Officer, and/or whoever is in charge of managing range operations.

Come check us out and maybe give it a try. You will either decide quickly that archery is not for you or maybe get very passionate about this precision sport that challenges your mind and body. Each shot is a “Zen” moment, regardless of others shooting next to you.

After all, archery is a sport and a martial art. It requires a specific set of physical attributes and a mindset capable of focus, concentration, and commitment; however, a person with physical impairment, whether temporary or permanent, can still participate and enjoy archery. It is obviously more difficult, but not an impossible challenge, as evidenced by our former and current members who have visual and/or physical limitations, not to mention the Paralympics.

Two of our (former) members were small-framed women in their nineties! We currently have a member who has a visual impairment. Yet, he shoots regularly with the assistance of a camera tripod for establishing a contact point for his bow arm and special markings on the Shooting Line to position his stance and body. His wife advises him where the arrows land, and then she retrieves them only after the RM gives the command. Whenever she cannot accompany him, fellow members jump in without hesitation. We also have a couple of members who cannot stand on the Shooting Line, so they shoot while seated; again, fellow members retrieve their arrows when they cannot.

Our members are here to have fun by themselves and with the company of other enthusiasts. Archery is not a team sport, but it certainly feels like a team when we gather and share a love for the sport, exchange shooting knowledge, display respect for each other, and laugh at our missed shots.

We hope to see you at the range one day soon, as a spectator first and then as an LWAC member.
