Baby steps toward cutting the carbon footprint

Volunteers with the Garden Centers Club took part in a beautification project last month at Garden Center 1 along Moulton Parkway.  Each volunteer sponsored a tree and came out with their friends and families to dig holes to plant those trees.  Even members of the Aquadettes artistic swim team joined in the project.  The Volunteers planted 23 Tacoma Cassia’s, trees with a beautiful bloom of yellow flowers, along with 30 ground-covering blue Saliva Leucantha.  Annie Zipkin, a member of the Garden Centers Club and a horticulturalist, submitted a plan to Tom McCray of Village Management Services, and the Laguna Woods Nursery provided the trees and plants.  The volunteers each received a plaque with their personalized message to place in front of their tree.

The project will not only beautify the drive along Moulton Parkway, attract beneficial pollinators, and absorb approximately 500 pounds of carbon each year,  it will add to the already beautifully landscaped Village surroundings.  The Garden Centers Club hopes that by doing this, it will improve the carbon footprint and enhance the area.  At the Garden Centers, in addition to growing bountiful vegetable & fruit gardens all year long, there are many ongoing projects, and the club is always looking for additional volunteers to assist with them.
