A new City of Laguna Woods ordinance aimed at reducing wildlife activity and improving public safety will take effect later this month. The new ordinance reinforces a simple but important message: do not feed wildlife.
Recently adopted by the Laguna Woods City Council, the ordinance prohibits any action that could reasonably provide food for coyotes, rodents or other wildlife. This includes not only directly feeding animals, but also leaving food outdoors, maintaining bird feeders improperly or allowing fallen or decaying fruit to accumulate.
While these actions may seem minor, officials say they can have significant consequences.
Wildlife feeding creates a chain reaction. Predators such as coyotes are drawn to areas where food is available, often following smaller animals to those locations. Feeding one animal can ultimately attract many.
There are also public health considerations. Bringing wildlife into closer contact with people can increase the risk of disease transmission, including illnesses such as typhus and other zoonotic diseases.
In addition, human food is not suitable for wild animals and can disrupt their natural diet and behavior.
The ordinance is intended to reduce these risks by addressing both intentional and unintentional feeding sources.
