History, purpose, Activities

The Kiwanis club which began in 1957 is part of the Kiwanis International organization which began in 1915. It’s an organization of volunteers dedicated to globally make positive changes one child and one community at a time.  

The local club, also known as the Saddleback Kiwanis Club and Saddleback Kiwanis Foundation, is dedicated to providing service and filling community needs through 28 committees in such areas as disabled persons, hospital services, education, scholarships, and many other local projects. 

Some of the activities are to:

  • Provide scholarship funds for Saddleback Nursing students and local high school and junior college students 
  • Assist elementary, high school and college students to develop into service minded caring adults
  • Provide to local charities to help the community
  • Provide holiday baskets for villagers and to Camp Pendleton
    • Club members donate funds, shop for food, fill baskets and deliver them at Thanksgiving and Christmas
Meetings
  • The Kiwanis Club provides weekly social club meetings with interesting speakers
  • Meetings are held on Mondays at 11:45 AM in Clubhouse 2, Main Dining Room 
  • Visitors are welcome
  • The lunch costs are $10 for members and guests

Jim Lee, San Joaquin Elementary School Principal spoke to the Kiwanis group; Kiwanis awarded him a check for the school’s Spelling Bee. 

February 11th
Lynn Matthews will share stories about her work and adventures as a nurse as she cared for kids in Cambodia.

On a sad note Dorothy Webb, our 102 year old member  passed away on September 18.  Her memorial service is scheduled for Geneva Presbyterian Church at 2 PM on Saturday October 13.  Dorothy was a great member and rarely missed a meeting.  Her husband Ezra Webb was President of Saddleback Kiwanis in the 1989-1990 Year.   She would have been 103 on September 28.

The speaker will be Matthew Wadlinger , Chief Communications Officer,, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Orange County.  The Kiwanis Club annually donates funds to purchase school supplies and backpacks for children in the Orange County foster care system. We donated $500 to CASA last month to help with their backpack program.  CASA volunteers in the village filled 300 backpacks in August.  The Chair of the Day will be Jim Burge

Monday September 1
The speaker will be Victor Scheer, Historian at the Lake Forest Historical Park.  The program will be an overview of the park and four buildings in the park.  The oldest building is an adobe built in 1863 on a Mexican Land Grant.  The Chair of the Day will be Dottie Jefferies

Monday September 24
The speaker will be Stacey Dubowitch, Sales Counselor for the Wellington Senior Living Facility.  She will discuss the costs of senior living facilities and their benefits for senior living. The Wellington is part of the SRG organization (Senior Resource Group) with three facilities in Laguna Woods, the Wellington, the Regency and Las Palmas.  The Chair of the Day will be Jim Kane.

Monday August 13

     The program Monday August 13 will feature students from UCICKI which is the largest Circle K Club in the world located at the University of California Irvine.  Circle K is a Kiwanis sponsored college organization.  They will be taking over our program for the day.  We are also inviting some of our sponsored youth high school Key Club members to attend.

Monday August 20

     The program Monday August 20 will feature the always popular Dr. Trinh giving us a slide presentation of his recent medical mission trips to Israel-Jordan and to Vietnam.  He will also be giving us an update on the latest information from the research on Alzheimer’s studies. The speaker will be Dr Trinh, MD. His topic will be “The latest Medical Research on Cannabis and Brain Health.” Dr Trinh is currently the Chief Medical Officer for Irvine Clinical Research. Monday July 16
The speaker will be Kevin Tiber, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Farmers and Merchants Trust Company. He will be giving the club his annual report on the status of the Saddleback Kiwanis Foundation. he success of the Foundation enables the club to award over $60,000 in scholarships to needy students annually. Monday July 23
Sam Higa will be showing pictures from his recent trip to New York. The Growler submarine, the only American guided missile submarine open to the public is on display at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum. It offers visitors a firsthand look at life aboard a submarine and the once top secret missile command center. Former crew members were invited to the opening of a new exhibit “A View from the Deep: The Submarine Growler and the Cold War.” The Chair of the Day will be Jim Burge.

Monday, June 11 Monday June 11, Josue E. Hernandez, Director of Annual Giving at Radian Health Centers (Formerly AIDS Services Foundation of Orange County) will share information about their work to prevent HIV transmission in Orange County and to reduce the current infection rate of HIV in Orange County. Monday, June 18 Monday June 18, Karen Pollock, a distributor of Hempworx Products will share information about  Hemp products which include Cannabidiol (CBD), one of over 85 cannabinoids in the cannabis plant. CBD is the non-addictive ingredient. The product is legal in all 50 states. Come find out what all of the buzz is about. The Chair of the Day will be Ken Carter.

Monday June 25 Monday, June 25, Richard Ballo, a visitng Florida Kiwanian and author, will speak about overcoming life’s obstacles. He will share examples such as the death of a loved one or physical or mental obstacles in his new book, “Bullets and Babies” which is a true story of love, violence and the spirit to live. The story is based on the life of a woman that lived in Orange County. The Chair of the Day will be Jim Burge.

Monday, May 14
The speaker will be Don Zweifel presenting a program on the P-38 fighter plane. TheP-38 was the first fighter to fly over 400 mph. It was used extensively in both the Europe and the Pacific Theatre. The Chair of the Day will be Gil Rowland.

Monday, May 27
The speakers will be Kirsten Anderson of Towne Center Travel and Eric Bacon from Hurtigruten Travel. They will be discussing cruises that tour the Norwegian Coast and have their focus on the Arctic Northern Lights. If that trip is on your bucket list don’t miss this talk.  Escape the big city lights and get out into the scenic far North. The Chair of the Day will be Mike Hayes.

Special Message for Activities in April, 2018 from Jim Burge

Tuesday April 3rd at Clubhouse 6 from 5 PM to 9 PM we are having a potluck and team trivia organized by Jim Kane.  For information and to coordinate food choices call Jim Kane at 949-380-4856.

 Monday April 9th we will have our regular meeting in Clubhouse 2 but some of us will also be volunteering at the Saddleback Memorial Hospital golf tournament at El Niguel Country Club.

 April 13-15 Adele Warner will be chaperoning Key Clubbers to their District Convention in Reno.

 April 20th Steve Carpenter will be organizing volunteers for the Senior Summit in the Performing arts Center.   Call Steve at 949-400-8266 This is a big deal, free breakfast and lunch and at least 800 in attendance.   

 April 28th we are hosting the Key Club Annual Banquet in Clubhouse 6. 

 Other than the Kodamas collecting glasses, Dottie Jefferies stuffing dolls and members helping kids learning to read and Barbara Paine buying food and assorted BUG programs and Key Club meetings and members interviewing students for scholarships it will be a normal month except you will  hear from the City Manager, the Mayor , the District Attorney Tony Rackauckas, A WWII Army Nurse and a lady that is responsible for saving 811 babies in Orange County. 

 Show up to the Monday April 2nd meeting; a special mystery guest will be present.

April Club Meetings, 2018

April 2: Paul Leon, President of the Illumination Foundation will be our speaker. If the homeless problem in Orange County is to be solved this foundation will probably be one of the solutions. The Illumination Foundation is a grassroots organization that provides stable housing and services to homeless families. April 9: The speaker will be Debbe Magnusen the Founder of Project Cuddle. If you ever wonder what happens to babies abandoned at a fire station or police station Debbe will enlighten you.  Chair of the Day: Dutch Huizenga; Greeter: Roy Piazza; Pledge: Adele Warner; Invocation: Mary Lou Crooks 

April 16; The program will feature Chris Macon, Laguna Woods City Manager and Mayor Carol Moore. They will be giving us their annual State of the City Address. Chair of the Day: Sandy Verrall; Greeter: Jim Kane; Pledge: Dick Christy; Invocation: Mike Maxson

April 30: The speaker will be Muriel Engelman, a former WW II army nurse who will share her  life story growing up in the depression, working with polio patients then sailing with her hospital unit after D Day and working in a 1,000 bed tent hospital in Belgium close to the front lines and undergoing buzz bomb attacks. Monday, March 5

The speaker will be the always popular Dr. Trinh, MD, Chief Medical Officer Irvine Clinical Research with his continuing series on Senior Health issues. His topic will be “Healthy Heart Strategies  and the Relationship between Heart Health and Brain Health”. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. The Chair of the Day will be Sam Higa.

Monday, March 12

The speaker March 12th will be Lara Fisher, Executive Director of South County Outreach. Their food pantry distributes nearly 1 million pounds of emergency food to an average of 9,000 families annually. Some of them live in our village.  Kiwanis member and dedicated SCO supporter Barbara Paine shops for food for SCO every week. The Chair of the Day will be Barbara Paine.

Monday, March 19

The primary speaker will be Janice Frechette of the Parentis Foundation. Janice was at our meeting April 17, 2017. She was promoting the AARP Experience Corps literacy program. The program has since been very successful in improving the lives of local children. Janice will be giving us an update on the program success in this area. If you are interested in changing the life of a child by mentoring please show up at this meeting. Jim Burge will be the Chair of the Day.

Monday, March 26 

The speaker will be David Bunch. His topic will be “Parkinson’s 101.” Mr Bunch was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2013. Since that date he has attended over 590 Parkinson’s related support groups, classes, seminar’s etc. He has now acquired the title, “The Voice of Parkinson’s”. He currently facilitates three support groups.     The Chair of the Day will be Lisa Colavita.

The speaker will be Dr. Trinh, continuing with his series of lectures on senior health issues. His talk will focus on Fall Prevention Strategies. Falls can be life threatening for seniors. The speaker will be Ken Carter, CFP and Retirement Income Strategist and owner of Carter Financial Services. Ken will be discussing recent changes in the stock market and suggest things a senior should take into consideration when trying to preserve their assets. Monday, February 19

The speaker Monday, February 19th will be Paul De Beats, a professional videographer. Paul has been a video producer and documentary film maker for the past 25 years. His desire to keep family storytelling alive has become his passion, thus started, Living Family Legacy Videos. “Our Greatest Generation” has so many stories to be told, so their children and grandchildren will have lasting memories of their family’s history.  The Chair of the Day will be Larry Porter.

This day will be sponsored youth day at Saddleback Kiwanis.  Representatives from two high school key clubs and two circle K college groups will be our guests.  Saddleback Kiwanis sponsors Key Clubs at Laguna Hills HS and Aliso Niguel HS.  We also sponsor a Circle K Club at Saddleback College. The Circle K Club at UC Irvine will also be in attendance.  The Chair of the Day will be Gil Rowland.
