Update: Village Vaccination Program

Above: Members of the MemorialCare Medical Group prepare to roll out to deliver COVID-19 vaccines to housebound Village residents.

To date, not including today’s vaccination clinic numbers, more than 7,000 residents 65 and older have received their first of two COVID-19 vaccination injections.

However, we currently are experiencing a supply challenge, as are public health agencies across California and other states.

The Vaccine Supply Chain

The state receives an allocation of vaccines from the federal government but is unable to request a specific number of vaccines, according to the California Department of Public Health. Then, county health officials request vaccines from the state.

Here in California

According to COVID19.ca.gov, “COVID-19 vaccination is one of the most important tools to end the COVID-19 pandemic. The State is prioritizing vaccines for equitable distribution to everyone in California who wants it. We expect to have enough supplies to vaccinate most Californians by summer 2021.”

Today, Tomorrow in the Village

Laguna Woods Village is grateful to have received vaccine supplies from the Orange County Healthcare Agency (OCHCA), which allowed us to vaccinate thousands of residents over the past month.

We had planned to continue with first-dose clinics at Clubhouse 7 tomorrow; however, we have been informed by OCHCA that we will not be receiving the vaccine supply to do so.

We used our remaining vaccine supply for today’s clinic at Clubhouse 7 for those with appointments, as well as for our homebound residents. If you have an appointment scheduled for Saturday, you will receive an email through myChart to attend Friday’s clinic instead. If you had an appointment scheduled for Friday, your appointment time may have changed, in which case you will receive an email through myChart.

Looking Ahead

In order to continue first-dose vaccine clinics, Laguna Woods Village depends on Orange County and California State agencies to supply the vaccines. Please be assured that we will continue to work with OCHCA in hopes of securing additional vaccine supplies each week to vaccinate more Laguna Woods Village residents.

Other Options

Vaccinating everyone will take time. If you prefer, you may choose to take advantage of one of the county-organized super POD (point-of-dispensing) sites, like the ones you may have heard about at Disneyland and Soka University. Orange County residents may schedule a vaccine appointment by going to Othena.com.
