Keep Cool During Hot Temps

The first official day of summer is Saturday, June 20, but we’re already seeing temperatures creeping ever upward. When faced with hot weather, keep the following tips in mind:

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day—don’t wait until you feel thirsty.
  • Wear comfortable, loose clothing.
  • Do not engage in strenuous activities and get plenty of rest.
  • Do not rely exclusively on indoor fans. If you do not have air conditioning, seek activities inside air-conditioned buildings.
  • Do not use your oven or stovetop to cook.
  • Make sure pets have access to plenty of cool water and air conditioning.

People 65 and older, and those with chronic diseases or mental illness, are at a higher risk for heatstroke. Symptoms include throbbing headache, dizziness and light-headedness; lack of sweating; red, hot and dry skin; muscle weakness or cramps; nausea and vomiting; rapid heartbeat; rapid or shallow breathing; confusion, disorientation or staggering; seizures; and unconsciousness. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, call 911. Click here for more information about heat-related illness from the CDC.
