A. General<\/p>\n
1<\/p>\n
Residents and guests must sign in upon arrival at the facility.<\/p>\n
2<\/p>\n
Report broken tools to the instructor\u2019s\/volunteer supervisor\u2019s attention before<\/p>\n
returning them. Training prior to tool use is required.<\/p>\n
Always clean the working area and the area around any tool used at the end of the<\/p>\n
studio\/workshop period.<\/p>\n
Work quietly in the studio\/workshop. Respectfully moderate voices and sound.<\/p>\n
Silence phones; use them outside if necessary.<\/p>\n
Residents\/guests cannot be under the influence of alcohol, drugs and\/or medication<\/p>\n
that may alter ability to use equipment safely.<\/p>\n
Recreation staff has the final authority to determine safe procedures, protect<\/p>\n
facilities and equipment, and enforce all policies and operating rules. Volunteer<\/p>\n
supervisors may determine if a resident\/guest is using the equipment incorrectly or<\/p>\n
unsafely and may request adherence to proper equipment use.<\/p>\n
Club meetings and events do not have priority use. Club events must be approved by<\/p>\n
the Recreation Department in order to take priority at the facility.<\/p>\n
Please refer to the studio\/workshop procedures for metal shear, rolling mill\/hydraulic<\/p>\n
press, acid etching, buffing\/grinding machines, drill press, soldering station, kiln,<\/p>\n
enamels and\/or material handling.<\/p>\n
B. Safety<\/p>\n
1. Cigarette lighters and matches are prohibited.<\/p>\n
2. Loose clothing, gloves (except thermal oven gloves), neckties, bracelets or loose<\/p>\n
jewelry that could get caught in moving parts is not permitted. Secure long hairin a<\/p>\n
ponytail. Nonslip, closed-toe shoes are required.<\/p>\n
Wear safety glasses at all times.<\/p>\n
Protect all surfaces in the studio\/workshop by hammering on metal blocks or the<\/p>\n
anvil, saw cutting and filing on bench pins, and applying nail polish or marking<\/p>\n
materials on metal that sits on a protective sheet of poster board.<\/p>\n
Carry all sharp objects and tools pointing downward; move with caution.<\/p>\n
Quench all hot material after heating and especially before asking questions or<\/p>\n
showing to another person.<\/p>\n
Store materials and tools out of the way of other users. If using a large tool box, store<\/p>\n
under the table to prevent tripping.<\/p>\n
C. Metal Casting Safety<\/p>\n
1. Eye protection, leather apron and fireproof gloves are required.<\/p>\n

\nHave a step-by-step plan in place.<\/p>\n
Know where the fire extinguisher is located.<\/p>\n
Keep bystanders away from casting area.<\/p>\n
Announce the start of the metal casting to the volunteer supervisor.<\/p>\n
Turn exhaust on.<\/p>\n
D. Emeritus Students<\/p>\n
1<\/p>\n
Students may not enter the room without a volunteer supervisor present.<\/p>\n
2<\/p>\n
Nonresident students may enter the studio\/workshop 15 minutes before the beginning of<\/p>\n
posted class time and must leave promptly by the end of class.<\/p>\n
Students may enter the studio\/workshop only during the actual class times of the specific<\/p>\n
class(es) in which they are enrolled.<\/p>\n
Serial production is not permitted (no more than three pieces of the same kind).<\/p>\n
Note: The Recreation Department reserves the right to review and adjust the operating rules<\/p>\n
to accommodate the needs of the community. All GRF policies and procedures apply to the<\/p>\n
use of the amenities.<\/p>\n
