2014 Village Games - Closing Ceremony
The 2014 Village Games Closing Ceremony took place Monday, April 28, featuring a free breakfast, a photo slideshow, and gifts for participating residents.
“This event reminds us how active our community is and how important our recreation facilities are to Laguna Woods Village,” remarked Jennifer Murphy, Recreation Supervisor. “This year we had 503 residents registered to compete in at least one of 26 venues.”
Of those 503, 16 participants were 90-plus years old, including one who will be turning 100 this July.
Open for participation to Laguna Woods Village residents, there are over two dozen events scheduled throughout the community: archery, badminton, basketball, bicycling, billiards, bocce ball, bowling, duplicate bridge, progressive bridge, cribbage, equestrian, fitness, 27-hole golf, par three golf, lawn bowling, paddle tennis, pickleball, poker, scrabble, shuffleboard, swimming, table tennis, target shooting, tennis, and volleyball.
Many residents participated in multiple events. The Games, which spanned most of April, saw over 1,000 participants in the various events and over 700 medals awarded to winners. The most popular events were bocce, duplicate bridge, 27 hole golf, poker, table tennis, and tennis.
"The Recreation Staff does a great job planning the Village Games each year,” said Jerry Storage, General Manager at Laguna Woods Village. “The Games are a wonderful way to promote health and wellness by bringing the community together."
Special thanks to Humana, the Village Games’ title sponsor.
